Posdnous of De La Soul gave a heartfelt tribute to late member Trugoy the Dove on new Statik Selektah-produced song “Round Trip (For Dave).” The track, which appears on Selektah’s new albumRound Trip, finds Pos, rhyming about losing his longtime groupmate and their three-decade history.
“My brother left on his return ticket so the pieces of our heart/ I guess some were left to picket/ His round trip journey returned him to the source/ So most would think we been derailed off the course/ But, no matter how sad, the fire in our eyes can’t be doused out/ But tears, 30-plus years will back us,” Pos raps on the song.
The new track comes months after Trugoy, born David Jolicoeur died at 54-years-old in February, the same month that Jolicoeur’s posthumous vocals appeared on Gorillaz’s Cracker Island (Deluxe). The unexpected loss was also just weeks ahead of De La Soul’s back catalog being released to streaming services.
Surviving De La Soul members Pos and DJ Maseo recently stopped by Revolt podcast Drink Champs, where they shared that Jolicoeur’s death from congestive heart failure came as a surprise.
“We knew, been knowing about it since The Grind Date album. There was certain things he could’ve done or was told to do and what point he could be doing it. At one point, you just get comfortable and ‘OK, I’m doing what the doc told me to do, I’m on point,’ and sometimes you want to fall off your health regimen,” Pos stated. “We all talked three days before we lost this brother like, ‘We gotta get this right.’ I didn’t see this s*** coming, I’m being honest.”
Also appearing on Round Trip are Joey Bada$, Benny the Butcher, Ab-Soul, Bun B, Conway the Machine, Wu-Tang Clan members Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, and Inspectah Deck and more.
