The Wire doesn’t need a reboot. At least, that’s the opinion of one of the acclaimed show’s former stars. Wendell Pierce starred as homicide detective William “Bunk” Moreland on the HBO series, which ran for five seasons from 2002 to 2008 and depicted crime, policing and politics in the thick of the early 2000s Baltimore drug trade.
“The Wire is something that is classic,” Pierce told Collider. “What makes it classic [is] it speaks to, it spoke to the audience then, it speaks to us now, it will speak to audiences long after it’s over.”
Pierce says the show’s themes make it timeless television.
“The cautionary tale that it was, the fact that it lets people know there’s an ugly side of human nature,” said Pierce regarding why the show resonates beyond its time, and he also referenced recent ICE raids. “We’re seeing that demonstrated today. I mean as we stand here on wonderful beautiful Hollywood Boulevard, they have American secret police who raided MacArthur Park today with guns drawn on citizens for no reason.
“That’s a dangerous thing,” he continued. “That’s why The Wire is so poignant. It was a canary in the mine then and it’s a canary in the mine now. What kind of society do we want to be a part of?”
The show also starred Idris Elba, Dominic West, Michael B. Jordan, Wood Harris, Sonja Sohn, Lance Reddick, Michael K. Williams, Andre Royo, John Doman, Domenick Lombardozz, Glynn Turman, and many more.
Pierce has enjoyed a lengthy career on stage and screen, both before and since The Wire’s run. He’s currently appearing in James Gunn’s blockbuster, Superman.
