SZA is being transparent about her struggles with anxiety. In a recent interview with Chappell Roan as this month’s Interview Magazine cover story, the Grammy winner opened about how hard it could be for her to overcome her most anxious feelings when performing or appearing publicly.
“Every time I had to go on stage, every time I had to get on a carpet, I’d have full-on panic attacks,” SZA says. “I used to not show up to something because it was like, ‘I’m never going to win. No one cares that I’m here. Why would I go?’”
SZA went on to reveal that even her currently being on the Grand National Tour with Kendrick Lamar was a source of serious unease prior to launch.
“Same thing with the Kendrick tour,” she said, explaining her worries before the tour kicked off in April. “‘Everybody’s going to see Kendrick. I don’t even know if I have anything to show these people that’s exciting and new.’”
SZA has nonetheless had a remarkable 2025. On top of the very well-received GNX Tour–which continues through December, SZA debuted her own NOT BEAUTY cosmetic line back in April. Her buddy comedy One Of Them Days was a hit at the box office, she took home the Grammy for Best R&B song, and her appearance at Super Bowl LIX alongside Kendrick was lauded–as was the music video for their hit song “Luther” — perfectly setting the stage for their tour.
Also in April, her album SOS passed Adele’s 21 for the most weeks spent in the top 10 among albums by women on the latest Billboard 200. According to Billboard, this (the week of April 16) is the 85th nonconsecutive week in the top 10 on the chart for SOS. Adele’s 21 was last at the top 10 for its 84th and final (nonconsecutive) week in the region on the Jan. 9, 2016-dated chart.
“Now it’s just like, ‘F–k it. I don’t have anything else to do, and I want to see where this door is going to lead,’” SZA says. “I want to walk through the door. I want to see what happens in the uncertainty.”
