Donald Trump Learns About Chronic Insufficiency After Health Exam
During a meeting on Thursday, July 17, at The White House, press secretary Karoline Leavitt read a note from Donald Trump’s physician, Capt. Sean Barbabella. In the letter, Barbabella said doctors performed ultrasounds on Trump and later found “chronic venous insufficiency,” a benign and common condition, particularly in individuals over the age of the 70. Trump reportedly chose to be transparent about the findings after folks started noticing bruising on his hands and swelling in his legs.
According to CNN, Trump went through the exam after he noticed mild swelling in his lower legs in recent weeks. Despite noticing the swelling in his legs, Leavitt said Donald Trump hasn’t shown any signs of heart failure, renal issues, or other systemic illnesses.
What Is Chronic Venous Insufficiency & What Does It Mean For Trump?
Chronic venous insufficiency happens when the valves inside certain veins don’t work properly, which causes blood to pool in the veins, per CNN. People with this condition might deal with swelling in their lower legs or ankles, aching or cramping, varicose veins, pain, or skin changes. Treatment usually starts with medication, but could later involve medical procedures if needed. Dr. Jeremy Faust, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Harvard Medical School, said this type of news isn’t concerning or shocking.
“This is a pretty normal part of aging, and especially for someone in the overweight to obese category, which is where the president has always been. But the bigger concern […] is that symptoms like this do need to be evaluated for more serious conditions, and that is what happened,” Dr. Faust explained.
