Slick Rick’s new album features a team-up with fellow rap titan Nas, on the track “Documents.” The U.K.-born emcee dropped Victory today (June 13)–which marks his return to album-making after a 25-plus year hiatus. One of Def Jam’s first signees, Rick’s new release comes courtesy of a deal with Mass Appeal. Mostly recording Victory in London, the legendary artist announced the project back in May with Nas and collaborator Idris Elba sharing in the moment.
“Slick Rick and I have a long history of working together so it was great to get back in the studio with him to create this new record,” shared Nas in a statement announcing the project. “Working with Slick Rick… back home in the U.K., and then offering the world of hip-hop something amazing has been a blessing. It’s literally a gift!” Elba said in a press release.
“Victory is all about perseverance, storytelling, imagination and evolution,” Rick said. “A visual blend of art and heart — a sonic journey that reflects where I’ve been and where I’m going. Victory isn’t just music — it’s a bold in your face statement, showcasing British artistry at its finest!”
The rap icon’s latest project features production from Elba and contributions from Nas and British star Giggs. Rick’s first album since 1999’s The Art of Storytelling, the project centers the Ruler himself–there are very few guest appearances.
The album’s release coincides with the international premiere of the visual album companion to Victory. According to the Tribeca Film Festival, the film “transports audiences to the vibrant streets of London” and will make its premiere at the festival. The movie features appearances from collaborators Elba, Nas and Giggs, and it’s directed by Meji Alabi. Slick Rick will join the audience for a live conversation following the premiere.
Born Ricky Walters, Rick came to the U.S. from the U.K. as a youth; his family settled in The Bronx. He initially found fame with hit singles “The Show” and “Ladi Dadi” as MC Ricky D in Doug E. Fresh’s Get Fresh Crew before signing with Def Jam and going on to stardom as Slick Rick. After releasing his classic 1988 debut studio album, The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick, he’s since been cited as one of the most influential and celebrated emcees of all time.
