Sean Kingston has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison. The singer’s sentence comes five months after he and his mother were convicted of five criminal counts, including wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. CBS News reports that it was in connection with a $1 million fraud scheme in which Kingston used his celebrity status to obtain high-end goods from sellers that he did not pay.
In addition to prison time, he was also sentenced to three years of supervised release.
According to the federal government, Kingston, born Kisean Anderson, conned his victims into providing him with a 232-inch television, expensive watches and other luxury goods that he’d promised to pay for, but he only sent them fake wire transfers.
“Sean is taking this as a learning experience and will continue moving forward in a positive direction,” the star’s attorney, Ms. Zeljka Bozanic, said via an email on Friday, according to The New York Times.
Investigators said his mother, Janice Turner, also played a role in the scheme. The two used Kingston’s fame and influence on social media to get their victims to forgo their due diligence. Kingston and Turner were arrested in May 2024 after a SWAT team raided his rented mansion in Southwest Ranches, Florida, and took his mother into custody.
Kingston was later arrested at Fort Irwin, an Army training base in California, where he was performing. He waived his right to fight extradition and was returned to Florida.
