Russian and Chinese Bombers Intercepted Near Alaska
Although this may activate side-eyes from the public, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) stated it was not a threat. China and Russia confirmed they weren’t being sneaky as they flew over international waters. They admitted to conducting a joint air patrol over the Bering Sea, which divides Russia and Alaska.
NORAD reported they “will continue to monitor competitor activity near North America and meet presence with presence.” We know dat’s right!
This isn’t the first time Russia’s military has been active in the North Pacific. They have long been flying in the region. However, China has emerged as a new presence in recent years. They are reportedly growing its navy and air force presence far from its shores. Furthermore, Zhang Xiaognag, China’s Defense Ministry spokesperson, stated Russia and China’s joint patrol tested and improved coordination between the two air forces. Moreover, he said it was the eighth time the two nations had teamed up for air patrol since 2019, so this ain’t nothin’ new. However, Zhang refused to respond when asked if it was their first patrol over the Bering Sea.
