Hip-hop is coming home for its 50th anniversary. Live Nation, Mass Appeal, and the New York Yankees have announced the upcoming Hip Hop 50 Live concert, which will be held at Yankee Stadium on the genre’s official birthday of August 11.
Headlining the event are pioneers Run-DMC for a special ‘Bottom of the Ninth…The Walk-Off’ performance. Additionally, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and Lil Wayne will come from their respective coasts to touch down for Hip Hop 50 Live. An all-women showcase dubbed “Queens of Hip Hop” will reintroduce Eve, Lil Kim, Remy Ma, and Trina, while other artists slated for the occasion are T.I., Fat Joe, Common, A$AP Ferg, EPMD, Ghostface Killah, Lupe Fiasco and Slick Rick.
Even more pioneers will hold down New York for the “Pillars of Hip-Hop” set, including Kool Herc & Cindy Campbell, Grandmaster Caz, Kurtis Blow, Melle Mel, Roxanne Shante, Scorpio and the Sugar Hill Gang. For turntable enthusiasts, a “Legendary DJ” set will host Clark Kent, Marley Marl, Mannie Fresh, and Battlecat.
Serving as creative music director for the engagement is Adam Blackstone, who’s also been musical director for the 2022 and 2023 Super Bowl halftime shows, along with Omar Edwards, the musical director for JAY-Z.
“I am honored to hit the stage in the Bronx, the birthplace of Hip Hop, and celebrate all of my heroes,” said Joseph “Rev Run” Simmons in a press release.
“Aug 11th is Hip Hop’s 50th birthday! So…’Up in the Bronx’ where it all started we will be celebrating this historic moment in history! I am honored to pay tribute to the culture that allowed this little shy kid from Queens to grow up and become The Mighty King of Rock! Thank you Hip Hop!!!” added Darryl “DMC” McDaniels.
