When it was announced that Colombian actress sasha street had been cast as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in the upcoming Flash moviesit was a historic moment as she became the first latina to portray the character in the DC Extended Universe. The film is set to be released in June 16 and ahead of the premiere Mattel debuted a new special collection Supergirl Barbie doll. The doll is wearing her signature bodysuit and features a flowing cape with the iconic S-Shield. “There’s a @barbie that looks like me.. I don’t know how to act. I’ve been taking her from her everywhere .. flying around and imagining laser eyes haha. huge hugs!! I still can’t believe it,” Calle tweeted sharing the doll.
Flash movie is largely inspired by the comic book storyline flash point, a mini-series where Barry Allen (Ezra Miller) goes back in time to save his mother’s life. As a result, he dramatically changes the future. While in the book, Kal-El/ Superman was captured by the US Military and kept hidden in an underground bunker, becoming “Project Superman.” But in the film, Calle’s version of Supergirl will be taking on that role for the movie. Supergirl appears to have the same powers that Henry Cavill’s Superman (also part of the DCEU), including super-strength, the ability to fly, and heat vision and harnesses her power from the sun.

“I saw more than four hundred auditions,” Argentine Director Andrés “Andy” Muschietti, told Deadline. “The US, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia. The talent pool was truly amazing and it was very hard to make a decision, but we finally found an actress who was destined to play this role.”
The film is now coming to theaters following the 2021 announcement and not only will fans get to see Calle as Supergirl but Michael Keaton returns as Bruce Wayne/ Batman. The actor played the Caped Crusader in Tim Burton’s Batman (1989) and batman returns (1992) and he was supposed to make an appearance in Batgirl starring Leslie Grace but the film was shelved. Meanwhile, Calle has been sharing what this role meant to her in the weeks ahead of the film release.
I put my heart and soul into supergirl. It’s so exciting to finally share a little bit of her with you! She’s so special & strong. Getting to know her de ella & feel her de ella has been one of my greatest honors,” Calle tweeted.
