Now THIS is one way to leave your mark! On Friday, Detroit got the surprise of a lifetime when a helicopter showed up and started dropping stacks from the sky. No joke—cash was raining down over the East Side, and it wasn’t a stunt or a movie scene. It was the final wish of Darrell Thomas—better known as “Plant”—who made sure his love for the community poured down from above.

Prayers Up! Plant Left Earth And His Bag Behind

Around 1 p.m. on June 27, traffic near Gratiot Ave and Conner Street came to a full stop—not for an accident, but because bands were flying out of the sky. According to locals, the money drop was the final request of a beloved car wash owner, Darrell “Plant” Thomas, who recently passed away from Alzheimer’s. Lisa Knife, who works at Airport Express Lube & Service nearby, said his wish was to show love to his community one last time… and baby, mission accomplished.

And get this—the helicopter didn’t just dip after the drop. Witnesses say it hovered for a few minutes, giving folks time to react before thousands of bills started raining down. People on foot, in cars, and even out of nearby stores were all caught up in the unexpected moment. The police had to shut down part of the street for 30 minutes! One thing’s for sure—Detroit felt the love that day, loud and green.

The Streets Ate—Meanwhile, The Timeline Stayed Broke

The streets definitely ate when cash literally fell from the sky, with folks out here catching bands like it was a block party no one wanted to miss. Meanwhile, the timeline is watching and sending all the praise from the sidelines. The Shade Room Instagram comments flooded with respect and applause, celebrating the man’s legendary last flex that brought the whole community together.

The Residents Had Something To Say

When that helicopter started making it rain over East Detroit, people were reaching for that money like it was Black Friday at Walmart. Lisa Knife told The Detroit News,

“There was no fighting, none of that. It was really beautiful. Everybody got a little bit.”

Anaya Toney, who works at Motor City Coney Island, said, “There were so many people, it was actually kinda crazy.” Lastly, “Smoke,” who is one of Darrell’s sons, helped put the money drop in motion. He spoke on his father’s legacy, saying:

“Detroit, y’all might not know who my father was, but he was a great father,” said Smoke. “Among his community he was a legend, and he blessed everyone and that was his last blessing to everyone. That’s all it was.” He concluded with, “Many blessings to everyone and long live Plant.”
