Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders recently revealed that he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. But, the University of Colorado head football coach shared that his doctors now say the 57-year-old is cancer-free. After his own battle, Sanders is opening up about that journey, and he has an important message for others.
“Men, everybody, get checked out,” Deion urged in a news conference Monday. “Because if it wasn’t for me getting tested for something else, they wouldn’t have stumbled up on this,” he said. “Especially African American men, we don’t like going to the doctors. We don’t like nothing to do with a doctor.”
“[I’m] not just talking to the brothers — I’m talking to my Caucasian brothers, my Hispanic brothers, my Asian brothers, my everybody — and my sisters,” he added. “Get checked out. Because it could have been a whole other gathering if I hadn’t.”
According to CBS News, Sanders’ treatment included laparoscopic surgery to remove his bladder and the creation of a new one from other tissue.
“It’s been a tremendous journey,” Sanders shared. “It’s been tough. I think I dropped 25 pounds. I was, like, uh, Atlanta Falcons Prime at one point.”
In a video that surfaced on Monday, an emotional Karrueche Tran was by Sanders’ hospital room, wiping away tears.
“We are here at the hospital because we are dealing with…,” the Daytime Emmy-winning actress/model said, pausing before she added, “We are dealing with bladder cancer. He is having his bladder removed.”
Coach Prime has also revealed that the consistent support of fellow NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss helped Sanders during his fight. Moss revealed last year that he himself had been diagnosed with cancer in his bile duct.
“Randy Moss called me every other day to make sure I was straight,” Sanders said in an interview. “Randy Moss prayed for me. He and his wife told me what I need to be doing. He’s going through some things that are very similar.”
Sanders was moved by the impact Moss’s support had on him.
“I love him to life. I love him more than ever. I pray that he comes to a game this year. He gave me so much strength, so much guidance, so much, love and appreciation,” Coach Prime said.
