The first trailer has been released for A24’s Marty Supreme, the mysterious new film that stars Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet and Tyler, The Creator. According to Deadline, the movie is directed by Josh Safdie (Uncut Gems), and possibly takes loose inspiration from the story of pro ping pong player Marty Reisman–although that hasn’t been confirmed and the film’s story is original.
Marty Supreme tells the story of Marty Mauser (Chalamet), a young man with a dream that isn’t very respected, and who goes through tremendous pain in the pursuit of that dream. It’s set in the world of 1950s ping pong culture.
The film boasts an impressive cast, including Penn Jillette, Fran Drescher, Sandra Bernhard, and filmmaker Abel Ferrara. Safdie and screenwriter Ronald Bronstein serve as executive producers alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet and A24. Marty Supreme is due in theaters this Christmas.
It looks to be the capper on a busy year for Tyler, The Creator. He kicked off his CHROMAKOPIA: The World Tour back in February at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota and Tyler is wrapping things up in the Philippines in September.
And back in July, he dropped Don’t Tap The Glass, his new album that threads varied eras of Black music.
“I just got back from a listening party for this album and man was it one of the greatest nights of my life,” he wrote on Instagram upon the album’s release. “30 people. No phones allowed. No cameras. Just speakers and a sweatbox. Everyone was dancing. Moving. Expressing. Sweating,” he shared. “It was truly beautiful. I played the album front to back twice. It felt like that pent-up energy finally got released and we craved the idea of letting more of it out.
“There was a freedom that filled the room,” Tyler continued. “A ball of energy that might not translate to every speaker that plays this album but man did that room nail it.”
