Busta Rhymes is adding another accolade to his already legendary career. The hip-hop icon has been named the recipient of the inaugural MTV VMA Rock The Bells Visionary Award, to be presented at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards. It’s a trophy that’s well-deserved, as Busta has been one of rap’s most inventive all-around visual and audio stylists for the entirety of his career.
Also set to be honored at this year’s VMAs is Mariah Carey, who will take home the Video Vanguard award recognizing her contributions. Salute to two legends. This year’s VMAs will be hosted by LL COOL J.
It was also announced that Alex Warren, J Balvin ft. DJ Snake, Sabrina Carpenter, and sombr are also booked as VMA performers. And pop superstar Ricky Martin will be honored with the Latin Icon Award.
Pop icon Lady Gaga leads nominations at this year’s VMAs with 12 nods, including video of the year, artist of the year and best album. Bruno Mars landed 11 nominations. Among the others leading the pack are Kendrick Lamar, Carpenter, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Blackpink singer Rosé, Billie Eilish and Charli XCX. Also, the VMAs finally added a Best Country category to the show’s lineup.
LL is set to host this year and the Hip-Hop icon co-hosted the show back in 2022 with Nicki Minaj and Jack Harlow. In addition to his previous hosting gig, the Queens rap legend has a lengthy history with the VMAs. He took home the award for Best Rap Video back in 1991. He was the first rapper to receive the Video Vanguard Award in 1997.
Earlier this year, Busta Rhymes appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to debut some tracks from his album, Dragon Season… The Awakening. During the performance, Busta did two new songs — “Unleash Me” and “Do the Busabus Pt. 2” — as well as his hit feature on Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now.”
