West Coast-born, Brooklyn-based music executive, award-winning filmmaker (High Touch, Chelsea Film Festival), and proud cancer survivor, Karlie Hustle, knows a thing or two about chill. The mother of one lovingly basks in the beauty and grit of the city with a reverence for the sweetness found just beneath the surface.

Okayplayer: When you want to be “outside” without really being outside, where do you go in NYC?

Karlie Hustle: SummerStage events and Smorgasburg are on the menu. I love neighborhood block parties and hanging out at the park where families are having cookouts and four different DJs are competing for ears. I’m a summer baby, so whatever I can do to be outside when the weather is nice is a win.

I also love going out to eat where there is outdoor seating – Saraghina in Bed Stuy is one of my faves. I also love Frank on the Lower East Side. Both Italian. Both a yes from me. BONUS: For grab-and-go bites, I love For All Things Good, Ursula, and the new Juici Patties. If there is a Mister Softee truck within eyeshot, please believe I am in line ordering a vanilla cone with rainbow sprinkles. Otherwise, I’m over at Brown Butter Creamery on Tompkins — they make their gelato on site!

Where do you go when you want to be around people, but not overwhelmed by people?

Lately, I’ve been running outdoors a lot. Literally, outside and coexisting with people, but also in my own world at the same time. Witnessing other New Yorkers along my runs just doing stuff – taking out the trash, walking to the train, skateboarding, eating outside of a cafe, arguing on the phone, waiting for the bus – sounds mundane, but it’s actually really enriching. I love to people-watch and share energy with others in that very low-stakes way. Getting to experience the city at the ground level can be both gorgeous and disgusting. For whatever reason, I am enchanted by both extremes. There was a time when I was critically ill and couldn’t get out of bed. It felt like the whole world was passing me by. Running over trash and dog shit isn’t everyone’s idea of a great time, but I think for me, maybe I’m trying to steal some of those lost moments back in an aggressive and intimate way. Being healthy enough to be active feels like an urgent privilege!

What does your perfect NYC day look like, from morning to night?

I like to wake up, take a walk to grab some coffee with the dog and my family. Greenberg’s Bagels secretly has the best coffee. Go for a run, check out a plant shop. Natty Garden has two BK locations, and I frequent both. Grab a smoothie from Bklyn Blend. Get a pedicure and some bubble tea – TBarr in Park Slope is a current fave. As we continue to spin our wheels on this dystopian hellscape, I fill the void with little treats. My perfect day is very chill and ends at home, making dinner with family and friends. In bed by 9pm? Don’t mind if I do.
