New Orleans-born, Brooklyn-based musician and vocalist, Greg Banks, knows how to find stillness in New York City. When he’s not on stage or in the studio, you’ll catch him running the trails of Prospect Park, savoring some rasta pasta in Flatbush, or digging for vintage finds in Brooklyn. Greg’s dialed-down version of New York is rhythmic, balanced, and restorative.
Okayplayer: When you want to be “outside” without really being outside, where do you go in NYC.
Greg Banks: When I want to be outside without really being outside, I like to go to Prospect Park. There are several spots inside the park that feel like other places I’ve been around the world. The trees block out the city noise so my imagination can take flight.
Where do you go when you want to be around people, but not overwhelmed by people?
When I want to be around people, but not overwhelmed, I stop by the Bath House in Williamsburg for the last possible session at 10pm, there is hardly anyone there outside of the staff and a few others scattered around.
What does your perfect NYC day look like, from morning to night?
My perfect day starts at 5am with a gratitude journal entry to center myself. I’ll run to the park workout for an hour and a half, head back home, make breakfast, then I’ll flow into reading a few chapters of whatever book I’m locked in on.
For lunch, I’d take the bus over to Lips Cafe in Flatbush, the Salmon Rasta Pasta is insane. I’d head home and work on some new song ideas and answer emails.
I’d stop by Brooklyn Vintage Company in Bushwick for a fly piece or two to add to my collection, then I head to the city to have dinner at Zaytina and top off the night with a pristine NYC skyline view at Nubeluz on top of the Ritz-Carlton Nomad.
