Malcolm-Jamal Warner, known for his role as Theodore Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has passed away, TMZ reports.
People additionally reports that Warner was on a family vacation in Costa Rica, where the beloved actor accidentally drowned.
Warner starred as Bill Cosby’s on-screen son when he was just 14 years old from 1984 until the show wrapped in 1992. He simultaneously hosted Saturday Night Live, appeared on Sesame Street, and had a recurring role in The Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World, as his Cosby character.
Following his role as Theo, Warner went on to star in several television shows and films, most notably as Malcolm McGee in the sitcom Malcolm & Eddie alongside comedian Eddie Griffin and as Alex Reed on Reed Between the Lines alongside Tracee Ellis Ross. He also served as a voice actor for several animated series such as The Magic School Bus, Adventures from the Book of Virtues, and Statik Shock. In 2015, he received a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the song “Jesus Children” alongside Robert Glasper Experiment and Lalah Hathaway, and in 2022 was nominated for Best Spoken Word Poetry Album for Hiding In Plain View.
Recently, Warner launched a podcast titled NAH (Not All Hood), which is described as “provocative look at the vastly different lived experiences and identities of Blacks in America.” The podcast aired its latest episode on July 18th.
Warner is survived by his wife and daughter. He was 54 years old.
