An explosion early Friday (July 18) left three people dead at a sheriff’s office training facility in Los Angeles. The incident is under investigation, but early reports suggest it could’ve been a possible training accident, per the Associated Press.

More Details About The Los Angeles Facility Explosion
Reports of the training facility explosion came in at around 7:30 a.m. The Biscailuz Training Facility was primarily impacted, says Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Nicole Nishida. Aerial footage from KABC-TV shows the explosion happened in a parking lot filled with sheriff patrol cars and box trucks. Tragically, three members of the department died. It’s unclear what caused the explosion or what the department members were doing when they died.
A law enforcement official briefed on the matter, but not authorized to discuss it, spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The source claimed that an early line of the investigation was looking at a possible training accident.
California Mayor & Governor Respond To Incident
In a post on X, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said several agencies are involved, including arson investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Los Angeles Fire Department, and members of the LAPD bomb squad.
Additionally, California Gov. Gavin Newsom‘s office said officials have briefed him on the explosion. He revealed that the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is in contact with the Sheriff’s Department as they are closely monitoring the situation.
Attorney General Speaks Out
In a post on X, Attorney General Pam Bondi said it “appears to be a horrific incident.” She said federal agents are at the scene to learn more. “Please pray for the families of the sheriff’s deputies killed,” Bondi wrote.
